Concentration Difficulties

Poor concentration, difficulty focusing or inattention are issues that are frequently mentioned when I start work with a new client. They are issues that are shared by several of the client groups with whom I commonly work.

Adults

These include adults with:

  • hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid)
  • auto-immune illnesses including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Guillain-Barre and more
  • fibromyalgia

Children

In children and young people, I most often hear it mentioned in association with:

  • ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome / post-viral fatigue
  • Learning difficulties

Choosing a Homeopathic remedy for Concentration Difficulties

Homeopathic reference books list hundreds of homeopathic remedies as useful for poor concentration. In order to choose the most suitable one for you or your child, a homeopath needs to gather detailed information about when you find it hardest to focus and how you experience this. (This is a complex process and not one I suggest you have a go at without professional training.)

Situations where your poor concentration arises

Firstly, it guides me in the search for an effective remedy if I know on what things you are most likely to have trouble focusing. For example, this might be:

  • conversations
  • reading
  • writing
  • mathematical tasks
  • abstract things

You may also suffer memory problems and find it hard to recall:

  • names
  • faces
  • how to find your way
  • facts you’ve read
  • what you were about to do next

All such details help me narrow down the possible remedies that match your individual challenges.

Your experience of concentration difficulties

I also need to understand as precisely as I can how you experience difficulty concentrating. This may be quite different from the next person’s experience. For example, you might tell me the feeling is one of:

  • your mind flitting from one thought to another
  • your thinking being clouded and lacking clarity, as if you have brain fog
  • a restlessness in the head
  • mental exhaustion when you try to focus
  • or perhaps you will describe it in a way I haven’t heard before

Young children or those with additional needs may not be able to describe how it feels. In these cases, I will look at their behaviour and emotional response when trying to concentrate. I will also listen carefully to information from their family / carers.

A remedy for you the individual

As always with treatment from a homeopath, I will be exploring many other aspects of your personality and health history in order to match a remedy to you. Treatment is individualised and selected for the person, rather than for a diagnosis or one particular difficulty.

Example cases

How I work with someone with concentration difficulties is probably best illustrated by some of the cases past clients have kindly given me permission to describe.

Amongst these are:
